Route 66: Cruising the American Dream was originally
presented as a senior thesis in American Studies Department at
Yale University. The hypermedia project was authored in Hypercard 2.2. and
included sound clips, video, images, and hypertext linking.
This is the World Wide Web adaptation of that project.
The video and sound clips are integral to the project as a whole, and they
have been compressed down to an almost acceptable size if you have
a network connection. They are worth the time it will take to download.
When we all have cable modems this will no longer be a concern!
"Route 66: Cruising the American Dream" is about the systems of value and
meaning attached to the American highway.
The project also shows how hypertext can expand the experiential
range of academic scholarship.
The paper I wrote about "Route 66" explains why
hypertext was the best format for this project and also offers a brief
history of the mother road.
