Law School Application Timetable

The following timetable is a guide to aid students who plan to apply for admission to law school. The process typically begins during the first term of the students' junior year, or two years prior to applying. Students should plan to have their applications in to the law schools the November prior to their year of matriculation.

The Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) is offered four times a year; June, September/October, December, and February. Students should focus on the June test, but only if prepared to do so. (The LSAT should not be taken lightly.) For additional information regarding the LSAT visit the official Law School Admission Councils website.

Junior Year (or 2 years prior to law school entry)

Target Date

Applicant's Responsibility

September-
December

  • Register for the UCS Law Email Distribution List to receive prelaw related information.
  • If you have not done so already, begin establishing ties with faculty members who later may write you letters of recommendation.
  • Consider attending the LSAC Law School Forum in either New York, Boston, or additional locations listed on www.lsac.org.

March

  • Register to take the June administration of the LSAT. The LSAT/CAS registration bulletin is available in the lobby of UCS. Wait until August to register for CAS.

June - August

  • Take the LSAT in June.
  • Begin drafting your personal statement and construct a resume to be included with your applications.
  • Research law schools; prepare a list of places to which you will apply.

September-
October

  • Register with the Credential Assembly Service (CAS). Registration forms are found in the same booklet as the LSAT registration forms.
  • Have your transcripts (from every institution of higher education you have ever attended) sent to CAS.

Senior Year (or 1 year prior to law school entry)

Target Date

Applicant's Responsibility

September

  • Check Events listings for upcoming law panels, law fairs, and law forums.
  • Discuss your school choices with the prelaw counselor.
  • Finalize personal statement and have it reviewed by your prelaw counselor, writing tutor, and several other readers.
  • Ask two professors for letters of recommendation to be sent to CAS. Consider asking a third person for an additional reference (another professor or a professional reference such as an internship supervisor, boss, coach, etc. is ideal).

October

  • Take the Fall LSAT (if you are repeating it or did not take it in June).
  • Complete and begin submitting applications by late October into early November.

November

  • Submitting applications by November 15 allows you the best chances for acceptance.
  • Begin investigating sources of financial aid (federal, institutional, private). Obtain applications and file as early as possible.

December

  • Check with the law schools to be sure that your files are complete.
  • Obtain a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from the financial aid office or from http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and file well before the deadline.

January

  • Have an updated transcript with your fall term grades sent directly to law schools.

February- April

  • Evaluate offers of acceptance and financial aid. You will not be required to place a deposit at any particular school until after April 1.
