A native of Hannibal, Missouri, Emily returns to New Haven this year to be summer carillonneur for a second time. As a rising junior in Yale College, she has finally decided to abandon the natural sciences (except for the dental school requirements) and major in sociology with a concentration in religious studies.
As a member of Branford College, Emily always felt a special connection to Harkness Tower, and after nine weeks of carillon lessons and a competitive audition process, Emily became a member of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs in November 2001. After serving as treasurer of the Guild this past year, she will take on the role of co-chair in the fall. She is also a member of the Yale Glee Club and will manage their winter tour to the Midwest next year, which will include the cities of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee. She studied piano with Peg Holzgrafe of Quincy, Illinois for several years, and she spent many past summers studying piano, voice, flute, and metalsmithing at Interlochen Center for the Arts in northern Michigan.
In addition to her ongoing musical pursuits, she is quite involved with technical theatre. As a member of the Yale Dramatic Association, she worked on numerous lighting crews, was the master electrician for a recent production of The Laramie Project, and even tried her hand at sound engineering for the spring mainstage, Les Liaisons Dangereuses. This summer, Emily is working on campus, shadowing some local orthodontists, and doing a lot of much needed relaxation.
