Core coursework preparation in phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and historical linguistics (usually 12 courses in first 3 terms). Four advanced seminars required in subsequent terms.
Submission of portfolio containing samples of work in the areas of syntax, phonology, and semantics or historical linguistics. Subfield examination in chosen area of linguistics, including annotated bibliography.
Presentation to the department or at a conference of two substantial research papers of publishable quality in different areas of linguistics.
Defence of dissertation prospectus by end of seventh term. Submission of one vetted dissertation chapter (with full bibliography) by end of eight term.
