When the battery in your laptop computer reaches the end of its useful life it is more than just a hassle - it is an environmental issue. Batteries need to be properly disposed of, and the Repair Unit of the Microcomputer Support Center can help. Bring your dead battery to the Repair Unit at 181 Whitney Avenue, and we will see that it is properly handled by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety. MAC POWERBOOK LAPTOPS

After months of product shortages throughout the U.S., many PowerBook models are now in good supply and available for immediate delivery at the MCSC. The PowerBook 520 has been the most popular. Selling for $1805, it uses a 50/25MHz 68LC040 processor and includes a monochrome passive-matrix display (16 level gray scale), 4MB of RAM, a 160MB hard disk and built-in ethernet capability. This particular model comes bundled with a variety of software packages including Claris Works and Quicken. For those desiring color, the PowerBook 520c sells for $2305 and includes a dual-scan color display supporting 256 colors at high resolution. The top of the line PowerBook 540C features an active-matrix color display, a 66/33 MHx 68LC040 processor, 4MB of RAM, a 320MB hard disk, built-in speakers and an integrated microphone. This model would be ideal for those making group presentations. Modems and additional memory are optional on all models; additional memory in particular is highly recommended!
IBM THINKPADS DROP IN PRICE
IBM has dropped their prices on the popular Thinkpad notebooks from $200-$900 across most of their line. The entry level Thinkpad 340 was $1499 and is now selling for $1045; it features a 25MHz 486SX processor, a monochrome LCD display, 4MB of RAM, 120MB hard disk and an internal 2400 baud modem. (Limited quantities in stock at MCSC.) A midrange Thinkpad 360c with a 33MHz 486SX processor, and dual scan color display was $2755 and is now $ 2430. The high end Thinkpad 755c with a 75MHz 486DX4, active matrix color display and 540MB hard disk was $5598 and is now $4975.
NEW DEC LAPTOPS
The new Digital HiNote and HiNote Ultra laptop line has started shipping; they range in speed from 486 33MHz to 75MHz DX4 models.
The Digital HiNotes start at $1650 and weigh approximately 5 lbs. Hard disk sizes range from 120Mb to 340MB. The internal floppy drive is standard, and these also come in both monochrome and color versions.
Starting at $2030, the Ultra line is aimed at those who travel frequently, with its sleek design and light weight--under 4 lbs. A range of processing speeds and hard disk sizes is available--while a floppy drive is not built into the notebook, a zero footprint floppy dock is included with each Ultra system. These laptops feature a 9.5" dual scan mono or color display and a full size keyboard with a front-mounted trackball.
Both the HiNotes and HiNote Ultras come with preloaded software including DOS, Windows for Workgroups, Lotus Organizer etc.
