Under the supervision of its Curator,
and with Council contributions, Yale maintains one of most extensive
Southeast
Asia library collections in the United States, located
primarily in Yale's Sterling
Memorial Library and affiliated schools. Materials
in the Southeast Asia Collection are in both western and vernacular
languages of the countries covered, and primarily emphasize the
social sciences and humanities.

| The
Yale University Library began collecting material on Southeast Asia
in 1899, when a teaching program focusing on the region was initiated.
It was due to this early start that the library was able to acquire
many of its now out-of-print serials, especially from the Dutch
East Indies. Yale participates in cooperative acquisitions programs
through the Library of Congress, collecting materials from Indonesia,
Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. The library also has benefited from
agents in Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. Two
distinctive collections that have come to the library are the Maurice
Durand Collection, which is particularly strong in the literature,
history, and civilization of Indo-China, and the Yeh Hua Fen Collection,
which consists mainly of books on Malaysia and Singapore. |
| RESEARCH
FELLOWSHIPS: The Council provides limited
financial support for research-related purposes of Yale students

Fellowship assistance may be provided for pre-dissertation or masters
thesis field work, supplemental language training, or other academically

is also available from numerous other sources within the University.
