Grants to Students

CONTACT/ FIND US

Funding from the Ford Foundation allows SEAS to provide limited support for the research-related purposes of Yale University students with a demonstrated commitment to the field of Southeast Asian studies (Burma/Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia, East Timor, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam).

Appropriate Purposes for Support
Appropriate purposes for support include (but are not limited to) language training, masters thesis summer research, pre-dissertation research field work, and small supplements required to bring a research project to fruition. We do not fund long-term, basic dissertation research, nor do we consider applications for funding of activities connected with dissertation writeup. Requests for funding of brief visits (< 3 weeks) to fieldwork locales are generally discouraged as minimally productive, unless they are necessary follow-ups to previous, more substantial stays at the site. We expect other sources of funding to be pursued before or in addition to SEAS application, and such effort will be considered positively by the award selection committee.

Deadlines, Limitations, Expectations
Deadline for 2008 Summer applications (including all supporting materials and letters) is 4:00 P.M., February 25, 2008. Applications for academic 08/09 semester projects should also be submitted at this time. We generally will not consider applications for more than $3,000, in keeping with our effort to provide minimal funding for training and research necessary to a student's program and otherwise not available.

Please calculate your budget carefully: post-award revisions in total amount are not permitted.

Any graduate or undergraduate student currently enrolled at Yale may apply. Applicants who will graduate before the proposed project takes place will not be funded.

If relevant, please specify in as much detail as necessary your language proficiency for the proposed project. Applicants who are not native speakers are strongly encouraged to submit the
Language Proficiency Evaluation Form or comparable documentation. Applicants judged to be lacking appropriate language preparation will ordinarily NOT be funded.

Application

Please include the following in each application:

  1. SEAS Application Cover Page (<-click here to download) This interactive PDF form should be filled out onscreen and printed. Contact seas@yale.edu if you have any problems downloading this form, or prefer Excel format.
  2. Project proposal (2 pages) succinctly specifying the request, and justifying its importance
  3. Budget, including details of how money is to be spent, other funds received, and other funding applications pending. (1st and 2nd year PhD students should be sure to account in their budgets for the Summer Study Fellowships available from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences).
  4. Copy of transcript (should be sufficiently up-to-date to include courses in which applicant is currently enrolled)
  5. One letter of recommendation (from the faculty member most directly relevant to the program). Letters may be e-mailed. (Writers of recommendations are expected to get their letters to you or the SEAS office by the date of the application deadline. If a letter is submitted late for any reason, it MUST be submitted via e-mail to seas@yale.edu so that it can be forwarded electronically to the readers.)
  6. If relevant -> Language Proficiency Evaluation Form (>click here to download), letter from language instructor, or personal statement regarding language training.
  7. All applicants must register on the Yale Students Grants and Fellowships Database. (For instructions, see http://studentgrants.yale.edu/assistance/registering.asp)
A signed print-out of the registration cover sheet for SEAS must be attached to this application.

    >Please submit materials unbound, clipped not stapled; single-sided pages.

    > Do NOT include any other materials (e.g., c.v., bibliography, additional letters of support, appendices). All such materials will be deleted from your application prior to review.

Award Notifications

**Subsequent to submission of your application to SEAS, please notify SEAS office regarding outcomes of any and all other pending grant applications as they become known. Should full funding or over-funding of total project budgets occur, you will be expected to decline or reimburse any SEAS award amounts over that total.

We hope to notify applicants of the awards on or before May 1.

As per University policy, all undergraduate students traveling with SEAS funds must sign and submit a Yale College Travel Release Form (<-click here). Completed, signed forms must be turned in to the SEAS office, prior to implementation of awards.

All
graduate students must submit a signed ">Assumption of Risk Form," (<-click here, fill out onscreen, print and sign.) Completed, signed forms must be turned in to the SEAS office prior to implementation of awards.

Students who are traveling are encouraged to log into Yale's Travel Emergency Contact Register.

Reports

A brief written report summarizing the results of your project, and how your funds were used is required at completion. Report forms will be available through the SEAS office. Please note that if you are traveling, you will need to submit your used airline ticket as part of your report. If the cost of the ticket is significantly lower than budgeted in your application, you may be asked to submit documentation showing how the surplus funds were used. SEAS reserves the right to audit your use of awarded funds. You are advised to keep a log of all expenses associated with this project, and to save receipts in case an audit is requested for any reason.

Should you fail to undertake or complete your project as planned and presented in your application, immediate notification is required. Full or partial return of awarded funds may be expected.

Please address any questions to Kris Mooseker, program administrator for the Southeast Asia Council, or contact J. Joseph Errington, Council Chair and Professor of Anthropology.

*NOTE TO UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: See http://www.world.yale.edu/travel/
for information on the Yale University International Travel Policy for Yale College students. You are responsible for reviewing this policy with regard to whether the country you wish to travel to is within the parameters of Yale's funding restrictions.
