University Javanese Gamelan Ensemble

The
Yale Gamelan Suprabanggo
Performance Ensemble rehearses in Room 04 (lower level), Hendrie
Hall, 165 Elm Street, New Haven, CT. The ensemble is currently comprised
of
students from
Yale College, the Yale School of Music, Yale employees, and New Haven
residents.

INAUGURAL
YALE UNIVERSITY CONCERT
|
On
26 January 2008 Gamelan Suprabanggo, presented its
inaugural Yale concert at 7:30 P.M. in
Battell
Chapel
The concert featured special guest Javanese performers Midiyanto,
from the University of California - Berkeley and Sumarsam,
from Wesleyan University. Expert performers from gamelan ensembles
around the Northeast also joined the members of Gamelan Suprabanggo
to round out the event. This well-attended evening was free and
open to the public.

LECTURE / DEMONSTRATION
Presented by Sarah Weiss, director of Yale's Gamelan Suprabanggo,
and two members of the ensemble at the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center
in the P.A.C.K (Parents and Communities for Kids) Music and Nature
series hosted by the Center and in conjunction with the New Haven
Symphony. Ensemble members performed two pieces, talked briefly about
gamelan in Central Java, and then taught young members of the enthusiastic
audience to play a simple piece. It was great fun for all (See Photo

OPEN REHEARSAL
Hear Central Javanese music and meet Bapak Midiyanto, UC-Berkeley
and Wonogiri Central Java (former owner of Suprabanggo ensemble) who will
be tuning and performing maintenance on the instruments from Thursday
evening, May 3 - Saturday evening, May 5
(The gamelan tuning is made possible through funds from the original
purchase grant given to the Department of Music by the Southeast Asia
Studies Council and through the vision and guidance of Joe Errington,
Council Chair).
