Fantasy in Three Movements (1959)
Heitor Villa-Lobos
Heitor Villa-Lobos, the foremost Brazilian composer to date, was commissioned by Mrs. S. J. Anathan, to write the Fantasy in Three Movements for a rather unusual instrumentation. The piece features a full wind ensemble (sans saxophones) augmented by the addition of harmony clarinets, contrabassoon, and flugelhorn. Villa-Lobos was vitally interested in the folk music of Brazil and his music emphasizes the native songs and tribal chants of the country.
